Cargo Lost, Damaged and Discrepant Cargo

When my cargo arrives damaged, or even fails to arrive, am I following the correct procedures? What are the time factors in which I must lodge a claim and receive settlement? What are the maximum liabilities of the different carriers/liable parties?  Has the carrier taken all necessary precautions to protect my cargo whilst it is in their care?  Do I understand how Standard Trading Terms and Conditions affect any settlement that is due to me as the cargo owner?  Have I accepted the Standard Trading Terms and Conditions as a condition of carriage of my cargo?  Many claims against carriers are repudiated because the person claiming does not know the correct procedures which need to be followed.
As a carrier under a house bill of lading, what are my responsibilities.
